Total Knee Replacement

Understanding the Technique

What is a total knee replacement?

Knee replacement, also known as knee arthroplasty, replaces unhealthy cartilage and bone in your knee with metal and polyethylene. This converts a rough joint surface caused by osteoarthritis into a smooth surface, which improves knee range of motion and reduces pain.

What are knee replacements made of?

Knee replacement components are made of metal and polyethylene. The metals used in knee replacement are titanium and cobalt-chromium. Polyethylene is a polymer that is provides a smooth articulating surface. These are tried-and-true materials that have provided millions of patients with excellent results.

How long do knee replacements last?

According to the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), there is a 90-95% chance that your knee replacement will last 10 years, and an 80-85% chance that it will last 20 years. The surgeons at Essex Orthopaedics uses the newest techniques and technologies to optimize the longevity of your implant and reduce the need for future surgery.

What is the recovery process like?

After total knee replacement, you’re able to walk the same day of surgery using an assistive device, such as crutches, a cane, or a walker. After you are discharged to home, a physical therapist will visit your home routinely to work on your mobility and knee motion. Your  knee replacement surgeon will see you in the office at regular intervals, usually 4 weeks, 3 months, and 1 year after surgery to check on your progress. If there are questions or concerns, our surgeons and staff are always available to take your call and address your needs.

Am I a candidate for total knee replacement?

If you have persistent knee pain that does not respond to conservative measures, such as activity modification, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy, then you may be a candidate. Make an appointment to discuss your options.
