How do ankle sprains occur?
Ankle sprains can occur when the ankle is twisted. This may occur during sporting or exercise activities. This may also occur during regular activities of daily living.
What is an ankle sprain?
Ankle sprains occur when the ligament arounds the ankle are stretched and injured.
What are the symptoms of ankle sprains?
The most common symptom is pain to the area. This may be accompanied by swelling and bruising. For athletes, it may be difficult to continue with sporting activities. Patient may note a limp or difficulty walking with an ankle sprain.
How are ankle sprains diagnosed?
The diagnosis is made by history, physical exam, and ankle x-rays. Patient usually note an event that caused the ankle sprain, such as a sports injury or slip and fall. The provider may find tenderness around the ankle, swelling, or bruising. X-rays demonstrate no fracture about the ankle. In some cases, advanced imaging, such as MRI, may be used to help establish the diagnosis.
How are ankle sprains treated?
The first line treatment for ankle sprains is non-surgical, including rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medications may be helpful. A brace or walking boot may be prescribed as well. Physical therapy for proprioceptive training may be helpful to reduce the risk of recurrence or re-injuring the ankle.
